# Jobs and Wages

> Look up quarterly employment, establishments and wages, and average annual pay, for a US county, state or the nation, by ownership and industry supersector.

Returns, for a US county, state or the nation, the quarterly number of establishments, monthly employment, total wages and average weekly wage, and the average annual pay by year, from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. It covers jobs covered by unemployment insurance only, and the newest quarter is preliminary.

BLS.gov cannot vouch for the data or analyses derived from these data after the data have been retrieved from BLS.gov.

## Authentication

Requires x402 payment in the `payment-signature` header.

## Request Body

**area\_fips** `string` *required*

The area: a five-digit county FIPS code (26163 is Wayne County, Michigan), a two-digit state FIPS code followed by 000 (26000), or US000 for the nation. Place Resolve gives the county code of an address as `county_id`. area\_fips is a five-digit county FIPS code, a state FIPS code followed by 000, or US000.

**ownership** `string`

Who employs: all owners, private employers, or federal, state or local government. One of `total`, `private`, `federal_government`, `state_government`, `local_government`. Defaults to `"total"`.

**industry** `string`

The industry supersector, or all industries. One of `all`, `natural_resources_and_mining`, `construction`, `manufacturing`, `trade_transportation_and_utilities`, `information`, `financial_activities`, `professional_and_business_services`, `education_and_health_services`, `leisure_and_hospitality`, `other_services`, `public_administration`. Defaults to `"all"`.

The public body the data comes from. Always `US Bureau of Labor Statistics`.

`public` when the data comes from a public body, `commercial` otherwise

**data.evidence.retrieved\_at** `string`

When the lookup was made, as an ISO 8601 UTC time

**data.evidence.as\_of** `string | null`

When the source says the fact was last updated, or `null` when the source gives no date

**data.result.found** `boolean`

Whether the source has any series for the area, ownership and industry.

**data.result.area\_fips** `string`

The area code asked for.

**data.result.ownership** `string`

The ownership asked for.

**data.result.industry** `string`

The industry asked for.

**data.result.quarters** `object[]`

One entry per published quarter, newest first.

**data.result.quarters\[].period** `string`

The quarter, for example 2026-Q1.

**data.result.quarters\[].year** `number`

Calendar year.

**data.result.quarters\[].quarter** `number`

Quarter of the year, 1 to 4.

**data.result.quarters\[].preliminary** `boolean`

True when any value of the quarter is preliminary.

**data.result.quarters\[].establishments** `number | null`

Number of establishments. `null` when the source gives no value.

**data.result.quarters\[].employment\_month\_1** `number | null`

Employment in the first month of the quarter. `null` when the source gives no value.

**data.result.quarters\[].employment\_month\_2** `number | null`

Employment in the second month of the quarter. `null` when the source gives no value.

**data.result.quarters\[].employment\_month\_3** `number | null`

Employment in the third month of the quarter. `null` when the source gives no value.

**data.result.quarters\[].total\_wages\_thousands** `number | null`

Total wages paid in the quarter, thousands of dollars. `null` when the source gives no value.

**data.result.quarters\[].average\_weekly\_wage** `number | null`

Average weekly wage, dollars. `null` when the source gives no value.

**data.result.annual\_pay** `object[]`

Average annual pay by year, newest first.

**data.result.annual\_pay\[].year** `number`

Calendar year.

**data.result.annual\_pay\[].average\_annual\_pay** `number | null`

Average annual pay, dollars. `null` when the source gives no value.

**data.result.annual\_pay\[].preliminary** `boolean`

True when the value is preliminary.

## Notes

* The source returns the last three calendar years; `quarters` and `annual_pay` are newest first.
* A value the source leaves blank is null. `total_wages_thousands` is in thousands of dollars, as published.
* An area, ownership or industry the source has no series for gives `found: false` and empty lists.
* Industry figures are published per ownership: a supersector with ownership `total` is refused.
* The source allows 25 keyless queries a day per address, shared by every caller.
* Results return inline. The finished job stays available at `/v1/requests/{request_id}`
